Natural Remedy for Insomnia

Sleep and magnesiumFor some people, sleep means a deep rejuvenating slumber, but for many others night time brings yet another encounter with restlessness, sleeplessness, and wakefulness…

Virtually everyone will have difficulty in getting a good night’s sleep once in a while. However, if you regularly wake up in the middle of the night and are unable to get back to sleep you could be suffering from insomnia or any other sleep disorder like Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). People with restless legs syndrome often feel an intense desire to move their legs, particularly when sitting still or trying to fall asleep. They get an uncomfortable “creepy-crawly sensation” in their legs, which gets better only if they move. Though RLS does not cause any serious damage to one’s health, not getting a good night’s sleep can leave the one feeling drowsy during the day.

Some people with RLS also suffer from another sleep disorder called periodic leg movement syndrome, which makes them kick their legs during sleep, making it difficult for them and their partners to have a peaceful night’s sleep. Sufferers of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children experiencing ‘growing pains’ are more likely to suffer from the disorder.

Magnesium as Sleep aid

Magnesium and insomniaResearch suggests that people who get less than 200 milligrams a day of magnesium can have shallow sleep patterns and more nighttime awakenings. Magnesium is crucial to normal muscle function and its deficiency seems to be factor in RLS. Magnesium also helps to support a strong immune system and maintain normal muscle and nerve function.

In 1993, Dr. H. Depoortere et al [1] (Department of Biology, Synthelabo Recherche, Bagneux, France) studied the influence of magnesium, one of the most important cations in the vertebrate body, on sleep. They found that magnesium deficiency results in a disrupted sleep cycle indicating an increase in neuronal excitability. When magnesium was reintroduced in diet, sleep was restored to its original patterns.

This study also reiterates the inferences of the landmark research conducted by Dr W.H Davis of the University of Pretoria. In 1976, Dr Davis [2] studied the use of magnesium chloride as a possible insomnia remedy. All the 200 participants in his 12-month long study were instructed to take eight tablets of 250 mgs each of magnesium chloride before sleeping. Ninety-nine percent of the patients reported that sleep was induced rapidly and was uninterrupted. Waking tiredness disappeared, and anxiety and tension diminished during the day. In the elderly, magnesium supplements were found to improve sleep by decreasing the release of cortisol, the stress hormone that causes sleep disruption.

From a nutritional perspective too, it has been established that Magnesium is an effective sleep aid and can help you to fall asleep and stay asleep through the night. James F. Balch, M.D.,[3] mentions the role of magnesium as an insomnia remedy in his book ‘Prescription for Nutritional Healing’: “A lack of calcium and magnesium will cause you to wake up after a few hours and not be able to return to sleep.”

Studies also suggest that supplemental magnesium may work as a sleep aid for RLS sufferers, even when their magnesium levels are adequate.[4,5] Popoviciu et al (University of Romania), conducted an open study of 10 people with insomnia related to restless leg movements in sleep and found that sleep quality improved when they took magnesium every night for 4 to 6 weeks.

Laura Loo, Mother of two children (in a post on www.mothering.com)
“We started using Natural Calm (the adult version) this past June with ds with great success. DS would typically wake in the middle of the night and not be able to get back to sleep very easily and then wake up in the morning grumpy. I can only think of 2 nights that he has woken up since we started where it was a problem for him to fall back asleep. And one of those nights I’m pretty sure dd woke him up.” http://www.mothering.com/discussions/showthread.php?p=11954543
Pearl S. ON, slept like a baby after taking NaturalCalm:
“I’ve noticed that I’m sleeping like a baby. I fall asleep and rarely wake. If I do, it’s only for a moment. I haven’t been in the habit of sleeping solidly througout the night for many years. I have to say I’m feeling great.”
David Pascal, DC,
“A. H. is five years old and has autism. He only slept four to five hours a night. The lack of sleep exacerbated his problems and took a toll on his parents. On his second night on Natural Calm he slept for eight hours. He has been taking Natural Calm for the past three weeks and is now sleeping eight to nine hours a night. “ P.S. I had personally been suffering from insomnia for over five years. Now I take Natural Calm and I sleep great every night.

Other Sources of Magnesium

You can increase magnesium content in your diet by consuming green vegetables and whole grains. Click to see a chart showing the amount of magnesium in some select food sources. Even if you are particular about eating a balanced diet comprising seafood, nuts and whole grains, chances are that you might still need to supplement your daily requirement with supplement like Natural Calm. A magnesium-rich diet will not only work as remedy for insomnia, this mineral also lowers your risk of cardiovascular disease.[6]

A Word of Caution

We don’t claim that Natural Calm Mag365 is a definite remedy for insomnia because sleep disorders can also be caused by deficiencies in Folic Acid [7], Thiamine [9], Iron [13] and Potassium [14] or excess Chromium [12]. Research also shows that supplementation of Niacinamide [8] ,Vitamin B12 [10], Vitamin E [11] helps remedy insomnia. However, in our experience, Mag365 is a more effective insomnia cure for sleep disorders such as restless leg syndrome. It is a fast acting and highly absorbable form of magnesium providing a sleep aid and an insomnia relief.
